Mac nfs manager3/18/2023 ![]() On the Mac OS X client, type the address of the share directory into the Address box. On the Mac OS X client, select Go in the Finder bar at the top of the screen, and then select Connect to Server. On the Linux server, make sure the the NFS service is running and re-export the shared directory by typing the following (as root user): # exportfs -a -v This is important because the Mac OS X Connect to Server window makes its request to mount the shared directory from a port above 1024, and fails without the option. The insecure option lets clients that request the exported directory make the request from an insecure port (ports above 1024). This example allows the /var/music directory to be shared with all computers (*) and allow read/write permission (rw). For example, to share the /var/music directory from the Linux server named, you can add the following line to the /etc/exports file on that server: /var/music *(rw,insecure) ![]() To be able to use the shared directory from Mac OS X, however, you must be sure to add the insecure option. On the Linux server, export a shared directory using the NFS facility as described in Chapter 18. To create an NFS shared directory in Linux and connect to it from a Mac client, do the following: (I describe the manual procedure at the end of this section.)Ĭonnecting to NFS from the Connect to Server window If you don't have access to the Linux server, you either need to ask the administrator of the Linux server to make the change or connect your Mac to the Linux NFS server manually. You can then use the files and directories (also called folders) that reside on the Linux NFS server as though they existed on your Mac OS X computer.Īs I've mentioned, the procedure relies on being able to make a small change to how the Linux NFS server offers the shared directory. The following procedure describes how to use the Connect to Server window from a Mac OS X client to access files and directories from a shared Linux NFS server. Although Mac OS X does support NFS connections from its Connect to Server window, you need to do a little trick on the Linux server for that server to accept connections from the Mac OS X computer.

Learning factory makerspace3/18/2023 ![]() “But after you hold something that you made yourself in your hands, you’ll be hooked. All the Makerspace resources you could hope for (and more) “It’s usually that first hurdle of going and trying it out,” he says. Dates for upcoming orientations will be posted through the UTSC Intranet in the fall semester.Īgmata says he encourages students from all fields of study to visit the Makerspace. The UTSC Library Makerspace is available to staff, faculty, and students, who must attend a one-time introductory orientation session to access the space and its equipment. “It really opens up a world of possibilities.” “What I really like is there is somewhere on campus that students can go and have resources to build things that interest them, we’re not just limiting it to building something for a course,” he says. Harrington says that The Makerspace has made the DE2 boards more accessible to students, which has caused the quality and ambition of the projects to go up. Students can build anything from games, to something that controls hardware, to a tool for future hardware users. “These DE2 boards allow students to build anything.” They’re used to projects where they have a very limited scope in which they can work,” says Harrington. “I like the fact that students are not limited. The last quarter is spent on a project with only one parameter: build something cool. Harrington says the first three-quarters of the semester are spent teaching students how to operate the boards. Similar to Arduino boards, DE2 boards are computer programming software that allows students to print a circuit directly on to hardware, which lets them create a real circuit board without having to construct the circuitry themselves. “The more students we bring in the easier it will be to create something new.”īrian Harrington, Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, used DE2 boards for his Computer Organization course. “Initially it was just the two of us shooting ideas off each other,” says Agmata. Soong plans to hold workshops in the coming year to introduce life-science students to the Makerspace as an asset to chemistry, and find new ways to use its tools. “I am highly encouraged after seeing how the Makerspace can provide a collaborative learning environment for students.” “I strongly believe in learning through making,” says Soong. Soong says he hopes to integrate different technologies into the life-science curriculum, to adapt to the increasingly multidisciplinary nature of science. Soong is using Agmata’s work as evidence that the Makerspace can be used in chemistry courses. “Automation is so prevalent today and these are skills that you’ll need in the future - from prototyping, to learning the programing, to learning the overall engineering behind it,” Agmata says. He created three sophisticated chemistry instruments: a calorimeter (for measuring a temperature change during chemical reactions) using a 3D-printed cup and lid, an auto-titrator (for automatically dispensing an acid into a base, or vice versa, while tracking pH) with a digital scale and a fraction collector (for separating and collecting various fractions of a solution) with a rotating carousel. “The Makerspace was something really different.”Īgmata used technologies in the Makerspace to craft the pieces needed to work with the Arduino board. “We wanted to go away from the conventional,” Agmata says. When Agmata approached his final research project for his fourth-year course, Directed Research in Chemistry, Soong proposed that Agmata tackle a project using an Arduino board, a computer programming tool that can be rented from the Makerspace. The goal of the Makerspace is to give students and faculty the freedom to create – this is just what fourth-year chemistry undergraduate Kyle Agmata and his supervisor, Senior Research Associate Ronald Soong, did this summer. Users also have access to software, like Adobe Creative Cloud. ![]() Among the advanced tools available are 3D scanners, 3D printers, virtual reality headsets, iMacs and a robotic arm. The Makerspace at U of T Scarborough is a combined workspace and laboratory. The UTSC Library Makerspace may be known for the intricate 3D-printed models lining its window, but students and faculty are finding new and creative ways all the time to use its tools.

Humankind gane3/18/2023 ![]() I wrote about the game in the article I mentioned earlier, after I had dabbled in the demo that was available on Google Stadia, and concluded then that the game was not for me. victory), from the Neolithic era all the way into the contemporary era. The subject of the present review is Humankind, a turn-based strategy game inspired by Sid Meier’s Civilization series of games, where the player is tasked to lead their faction to greatness (i.e. Or we should really try to make our own games: that is certainly something that I am currently devoting some of my time to.įor now, though, let’s stick to critiquing and discussing historical games. The choices they make are interesting, because they often reveal what kinds of ideas about past societies are widespread enough to be incorporated into a game.Ī lot of the time, outdated ideas and concepts resurface in games: those instances should be a call to action on the part of academically-trained professionals, historians and archaeologists alike, to try and get more involved with the process of creating and designing games. Game developers typically don’t have an academic background in history or archaeology, and so they must rely on their own research or advisors when it comes to emulating aspects of the past. Anecdotally, there are lots of players who profess to have been inspired to read more about the past after being engrossed by games like Civilization or Age of Empires. Games can be a fun way to introduce people to history. In November of last year, I wrote an article with some of my thoughts on historical strategy games. This article was originally published on the defunct Ancient World Magazine website and is now re-published here.

Da capo 3 r xrated guide3/18/2023 ![]() Typically the majority of player interaction is limited to clicking to keep the text, graphics and sound moving as if they were turning a page (many recent games offer "play" or "fast-forward" toggles that make this unnecessary), while making narrative choices along the way. ![]() Visual novels are distinguished from other game types by their generally minimal gameplay. The market for visual novels outside of East Asia is small, though a number of anime based on visual novels are popular among anime fans in the Western world examples include Clannad, Steins Gate, and Fate/stay night. The more famous visual novels are also often adapted into light novels, manga or anime and are sometimes succeeded or complimented by actual video games, such as RPGs or action games set in the same universe. Visual novels are rarely produced exclusively for dedicated video game consoles, but the more popular games have occasionally been ported from PC (or a hardware equivalent) to systems such as the Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, PlayStation Portable, or Xbox 360. This distinction is normally lost outside Japan, as both visual novels and adventure games are commonly referred to as "visual novels" by international fans. In Japanese, a distinction is often made between visual novels (NVL, from "novel"), which consist primarily of narration and have very few interactive elements, and adventure games (AVG or ADV, from "adventure"), which incorporate problem-solving and other types of gameplay. Visual novels originated in and are especially prevalent in Japan, where they made up nearly 70% of the PC game titles released in 2006. The format is more rarely referred to as novel game, a retranscription of the wasei-eigo term noberu gēmu ( ノベルゲーム), which is more often used in Japanese. They combine a textual narrative with static or animated illustrations and a varying degree of interactivity. Visual novels are often associated with and used in the medium of video games, but are not always labeled as such themselves.
